The Preferment curriculum: six modules over eight weeks

Last updated: November 2026. Published by Rarified Life.

The Preferment course covers six modules, Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability, and Launch, across eight weekly live sessions.

Rarified Life designed the curriculum as a structured path rather than a self-help pep talk. You work through the book Preferment chapter by chapter with its author, Anne van Leynseele, complete the homework built into the book between sessions, and finish by naming a mission for your next chapter.

What will I actually learn in the Preferment course?

You learn to separate who you are from what you did for a living, find what motivates you without a paycheck, and match your values and strengths to how you spend your days. Then you build the structure that turns those intentions into a routine and step into a named mission.

The six modules

Each module builds on the one before it.

  1. Module 1

    Introduction

Where you are right now, and why the old model of retirement was never built for someone like you.

  2. Module 2

    Identity

Separating who you are from what you did for a living.

  3. Module 3

    Motivation

Finding what actually moves you, now that a paycheck is not the reason.

  4. Module 4

    Alignment

Matching your values and strengths to how you will actually spend your days.

  5. Module 5

    Accountability

Building the structure that turns intention into a lived routine.

  6. Module 6

    Launch

Naming your mission for this next chapter, and stepping into it.

How each week works

Live session with Anne

Once a week you join a live session led by Anne van Leynseele. Sessions follow the book Preferment chapter by chapter, so the conversation and the reading stay in step.

The book as workbook

The book is included with enrollment. It is your companion text and your workbook, with exercises written into its chapters.

Homework between sessions

The homework is built into the book: real exercises, not busywork. Doing them between sessions is how reading turns into a plan you can act on.

Why the curriculum starts with identity, not money

Many retirement programs start with savings and investments. Preferment starts with identity because the hardest question after a big career is often not "Can I afford this?" but "So, what do you do?" Rarified Life's free webinar puts it plainly: the goal is a real answer to that question that does not begin with "I used to."

The Motivation and Alignment modules then replace the structure a job used to supply. Accountability makes the new structure stick, and Launch gives you a mission you can name. How much homework is there?
Homework is built into the Preferment book and done between sessions. Rarified Life calls it real exercises, not busywork. The course page does not state a number of hours, so plan regular time each week and ask about expected effort in a Breakthrough Session if your schedule is tight.

Do I need to read the book before the first session?
No. The book is included with the course, and the live sessions work through Preferment chapter by chapter. You read and complete the exercises as you go, so the reading and the conversation stay in step.

What happens at the end of the course?
The final module is Launch. In it you name your mission for this next chapter and step into it. The goal is a lived routine and a clear answer to "So, what do you do?" that does not start with "I used to."

Is the Preferment course live or self-paced?
The course is live. It includes eight weekly live sessions with Anne van Leynseele. Between sessions you complete the homework built into the Preferment book, so each week builds on the last. The Rarified Life course page does not describe a self-paced version.

What happens if I miss a live session?
The course page does not describe a policy for missed sessions or recordings. Because the course follows the book chapter by chapter, you can keep up with the reading and exercises. Ask Rarified Life about recordings before you enroll if you expect to miss a week.
